  Self Defence

.:: Nippon Kempo is essentially a sport and is not taught as a form of self-defence. However, given that it is one of the most effective and safest methods to learn and practise unarmed combat, its techniques and methods lend themselves well to self defence training.

.:: SelfDefenceCourses
.:: The association does run a series of self-defence orientated seminar sessions. These are aimed at people who want to develop some combat proficiency but are not able to make the full commitment required to take up Nippon Kempo in earnest. You do not have to be super fit to benefit from the self-defence courses but you must be in a reasonable state of health. As a guide, if your doctor will advise that it is not advisable for you to participate in this kind of training – then don't.

A distinction must be made between being streetwise and the physical aspects of self-defence. While some guidance in streetwise-ness is incorporated in the courses, the emphasis is on the physical aspects of defence.

.:: TheCourses
.:: The courses are taught using a modular system:

Induction Module
This is the initial course everyone must take. It covers an introduction to the following:

Preparation: avoid injury & maximise training.
Fitness: its importance, getting and staying fit.
Breathing: breathing correctly for maximum efficiency.
Eyes: use them for maximum observation and reflex.
Balance: how to use your feet effectively.
Stance: correct poise for maximum defence.
Kicks: dynamics of kicking.
Strike: the dynamics and art of punching.
Breakfalls: surviving being thrown.

This course gives a general blue print of what you can do to make you more prepared to cope and deal with physical danger. It is not meant as a total solution to self-defence. As we all differ, the induction will give a good indication of what defence techniques suits you best. Once you have taken the Induction module, you may attend any or all of the Practice modules. Each module concentrates on a particular approach to defence.

.:: PracticeModules

The core of these modules is drilling. While the Induction gives you a summary insight into self-defence, the Practice modules are where you are able to develop efficiency in practically applying the techniques introduced.

1. Strike Module
This module should be the next taken after the Induction even if you take none of the other modules. In fact, the Induction and this module alone are enough for you to develop an adequate level of self-defence. This module introduces you in detail to the use of your hands and arms as a striking weapon and for defending yourself. This is achieved by drilling. You will develop a level of efficiency in closing and delivering effective and powerful strikes irrespective of your height or weight. As striking/punching comes easily to most people, it is advisable to become proficient with this approach before attempting the other modules.

2. Kick Module
For those adept to kicking, this module takes you into more detail of the dynamics of kicking. You are not only shown how to practise and kick against an opponent (i.e. not against the air or a kick bag) but also taught how to defend against kicks.

3. Evasion Module
The key principle here is:-

"if you are not there when the attack arrives, it does not matter how big or strong the attacker is".

Mastery of evasion techniques is the key to effective defence. The objective of the session is to introduce you to drills that will develop instinctive evasive reflexes.

4. Breakout Module
This module introduces you to methods of escape from holds and grabs. You are shown how to use your opponent's weight and strength to your advantage. The module also introduces you to how to hold and grab effectively.

5. Subdue Module
This module introduces you to escape from being held down on the ground and ground wrestling.
